During CES, Nvidia made a number of major announcements at their keynote presentation. One of the major announcements expected was the unveiling and introduction of the new GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Pascal GPU. Unfortunately, that did not happen but it seems like the new card is closer than expected. According to the latest reports, the GTX 1080 Ti is expected to launch at PAX East in March this year.
Interestingly, the source suggests that Nvidia was actually planning to reveal the GTX 1080 Ti officially at CES. Once they got word that AMD would not be launching Vega anytime soon, they decided to hold off on GTX 1080 Ti for a while. This lets the GTX 1080 remain the top card for a bit longer and get more sales out of the Titan X Pascal as well. Due to the delay, it appears that the GTX 1080 Ti will be available on day one from all vendors as supply will likely have stocked up.
Honestly, it looks like Nvidia is cooling their heels since AMD hasn’t been providing much competition on the high end. This trend may continue for quite a while since Vega 10 likely won’t be succeeded by Vega 20 till 2018. This means we probably won’t see Volta which is the Pascal successor until late 2017 at best or even into 2018.
