Well we now know the GTX 660 is inbound for September the 12th. We also know its specifications:
- 28nm GK106 GPU
- 192 bit interface
- 2GB of GDDR5
- 6GHz effective memory clock
- 960 CUDA cores
- 24 ROPs
- 980MHz Core, 1033MHz boost
- 140W TDP
But its difficult to know how raw specifications translate into performance without some testing. Thankfully the GTX 660 has already been put through its 3D Mark 11 paces and the results look very impressive. The GTX 660 manages a P6917 score on 3D Mark 11 Performance test and X2364 on the 3D Mark 11 Extreme Test. Impressive numbers indeed, making the card faster than the GTX 580 in 3D Mark 11.
Images of the GK106 GPU chip show that it is a little bit smaller in size than the GK104 and identical in size to the GF116. Due to the fact this GK106 chip is designed specifically for the GTX 660 graphics card, unlike the GK104 which was originally designed for the GTX 680 and then cut down to make other cards in the series, means we should expect it to be the most energy efficient 28nm Nvidia graphics card yet.
