The GPU war is still going strong and it looks like Nvidia will be launching their next high performance single GPU graphics card no later than Q4-2014. The new card is set to be the GTX 880 and will launch along side the new GTX 870.
The new cards are to be based on the new GM204 hardware, which is belied to still use the 28nm silicon fabrication process, due to delays at TSMC in implementing the new 20nm process, which is why we switched to the new Maxwell GPU’s, but didn’t switch to a new fabrication process. Of course, as we saw with the GTX 750, Maxwell is a great bit of engineering, and the extra time this gives Nvidia to fine tune 20nm could be a good thing.
With a rumoured 3200 CUDA cores, 200 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interact and more, the new GM204 hardware sounds pretty awesome, and should offer steady improvements over the current GK104 architecture that powers their current line of high-end GPUs, but I guess we’ll have to wait until October / November to find out.
