How Much Does it Cost?

The Nvidia RTX 4070 Super hits the market with an MSRP of just $599, with the Founders Edition and other MSRP cards hitting that price range. Non-MSRP cards will be a little more than that, easily ranging from around $20-100 price difference for various upgraded configurations. However, I wouldn’t expect much more than that, given that the price of the upcoming RTX 4070 Ti Supers is said to be $799 and the RTX 4080 Super at $999, so it would make sense to keep some space between each model. Considering the older non-Super models are now officially end of life and these new cards are replacing them, it makes the Super variants extremely appealing, with more power for the same price, it’s really hard to argue. It seemed like prices would keep going up forever, but at least for now, things are heading in the right direction.

The main thorn in Nvidia’s side is AMD, as the Radeon RX 7800 XT is a strong contender, trading blows with Nvidia throughout this review, but costing around $100 less, it’s really hard to ignore for the budget-conscious among you. Of course, this has long been the case between Nvidia and AMD, but Nvidia still has the lead on some technologies such as their DLSS technology, AI features, and Ray Tracing, to name but a few, and you could argue that is worthy of the extra investment.

Overview

It’s clear that these are some very good cards, we thought the Nvidia RTX 4070 series was really great when it came to performance, and while yes we know the price was likely the biggest sticking point for many, I’ve not heard anyone I know that owns an RTX 4070 really complain about the quality and performance of the cards.

With that in mind, the RTX 4070 is now end-of-life, which means you can still buy one, but when the stock dries up, there will be no more to replace them. The RTX 4070 SUPER is taking its place, and that can only be a good thing for consumers looking to upgrade.

The new cards launch at the same MSRP the non-Super cards did, and while they are obviously faster, it’s good to see Nvidia didn’t just put the price up another 10-20%, and they could have, but they didn’t. It’s not quite the same as a price cut, but getting more bang for your buck is always a step in the right direction.

Furthermore, the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and RTX 4080 SUPER cards are coming later this month too, which will do much the same for the lineup, and will see more performance for the same prices across the board. However, there are no plans that we know of to do anything with the RTX 4090, but perhaps that’ll change later in the year.

Would I replace my 4xxx series card with a SUPER? Not likely, it’s a small upgrade offering something like 10-20 FPS in a lot of games, but there are other improvements to the cooling and efficiency that are welcome too. However, if you want a more compelling reason to upgrade from the 3xxx or 2xxx series of cards, or exponentially more so even older cards, then this certainly tips the scale in the favour of consumers. The card is on average around 50% faster than the RTX 3070, and on par with the 3080 Ti, but with a significantly lower cost per frame.

Should I Buy One?

Between the AMD 7800 XT and the Nvidia RTX 4070 SUPER, it’s an extremely close race on average, with AMD coming in around $100 cheaper, that’s maybe a no-brainer for some, but I still think Nvidia lead the pack with their scaling, frame generation and ray tracing technologies, and for some, that’s worth paying the extra premium.
