The next generation of GDDR7 memory is in development by Samsung as well as Cadence which provides DRAM PHY, EDA software and validation tools has announced its latest validation solution it seems that everything is in place for the next-generation GPUs to debut this new memory standard.
The latest graphics cards feature GDDR6/6X memory which has been around for nearly 5 years and currently can reach speeds of 24Gbps so the next step in moving up in speed with GDDR7 is the logical course and sources to mydrivers see it likely to be paired with the next generation graphics cards. Samsung announced back in 2021 that they were beginning work on GDDR7 and in December 2022 confirmed that they were in development which is just one half of the GDDR7 puzzle. The second half involves EDA giant Cadence which has recently provided the first GDDR7 Validation solution which allows GDDR7 chip designs to be tested and verified before they are printed.
The New GDDR7 is said to start with speeds as high as 36Gbps and through its life cycle is expected to exceed speeds of 50Gbps and when paired with a GPU with a 256-bit wide interface could see a GPU reaching 1.15 TB/s of bandwidth. At the moment we don’t know anything about the next generation of GPU’s, I mean we haven’t even seen all of this generation’s GPUs yet but what is expected is that we will see them in late 2024.
