NVIDIA has shared a trailer for Half-Life 2 RTX, an RTX Remix project bringing the iconic 2004 classic into a new light, literally.
The trailer shared on the NVIDIA GeForce youtube page has shown off a current RTX Remix project involving Half-Life 2 which is being developed by four of Half-Life 2’s top mod teams under the name Orbifold Studios. The modders have made use of the latest version of RTX Remix and have been rebuilding the materials and textures using Physically Based Rendering (PBR) to add extra geometric detail using Valve’s Hammer editor. The video shows off Kleiner’s lab in an entirely new light making Half-Life 2 look incredibly modern. You can watch the full trailer below.
A member of our Discord, which you can join here, pointed out how they find Ray-Tracing to be boring in modern games but amazing for remaking old games and bringing them up to a modern standard to which I couldn’t agree more. In most modern games the graphics are already good and Ray-Tracing is so subtle that it’s better to have it off to avoid the performance hit, but classic games getting remastered with the addition of Ray-Tracing is a lot more noticeable and is the best way to emphasise what Ray-Tracing does, though the performance hit is still there.
This project is currently in early development so it’s not something we will be seeing anytime soon but it does mean you will have another excuse to play through Half-Life 2 again at some point. The team behind this is currently actively looking for talented modders and artists to assist with the project, if that is you be sure to visit hl2rtx.com or if you would like more information on the project and RTX Remix, visit NVIDIA.com.
