NVIDIA is reportedly preparing to halt production of its flagship GPUs, the GeForce RTX 4090 and the China-exclusive RTX 4090D, starting in October 2024. This move will pave the way for the company’s upcoming RTX 50-series, with models like the RTX 5090 and 5090D expected to hit the market soon.
According to reports from Wccftech, the discontinuation is part of NVIDIA’s strategy to clear out the remaining stock of its current generation GPUs. While the production of the RTX 4090 will end soon, the card is likely to remain available in stores for several months due to existing inventory.
Although NVIDIA has not officially confirmed the discontinuation, insiders suggest that prices for the RTX 4090 could increase as supply dwindles. This is particularly expected around November, as demand may continue to outpace supply. Digital Trends points out that the RTX 4090 has already seen significant price hikes, especially in regions like China, where export restrictions have made the card even more scarce.
This move follows the usual pattern for NVIDIA’s flagship GPUs, which tend to have a limited shelf life once a new generation is announced. The upcoming RTX 50-series is likely to launch at the end of this year or in early 2025, further signaling the end of the RTX 4090’s reign as the top gaming GPU.
