After it unveiled a brand new developer module that can be used to make machines smarter, Nvidia has also revealed a very impressive teaser for “Everest VR” at an event that took place not too long ago. If you always wanted to climb Mount Everest but never go around to doing so, you will soon be able to experience the next best thing thanks to the wonders of virtual reality. Everest VR was created by Sólfar Studios and RVX using a Nvidia GPU that managed to blend no less than 300,000 high-resolution pictures of the mountain range.
The result is a 3D mesh and a series of textures that form a final CGI model of Everest. Some of the people currently working at Sólfar have been involved in noteworthy projects such as Eve Online, but it looks like this company is not interested in developing games right now, as it aims to focus solely on virtual reality projects. It’s true that Everest VR can’t really replicate the unique experience of climbing the world’s highest mountain, but it’s definitely something to look forward to nonetheless. Since I’m not an avid mountain climber myself, I’m not in a position to judge the project’s realism, but those of you who know more about Everest will be able to form your own opinion and share it with us next year when Everest VR will be released in its final form.
