The launch of the GK104 based GTX 680 is on Thursday the 22nd of March and if speculation is true, and yet more details emerge about the GK110 which was originally intended to be the GTX 680 until it emerged that the GK104 offered surprisingly punchy performance and was capable of holding the GTX X80 title of the 6 series. The GK110 is expected to be a GPU that will form part of the GTX 700 series of cards. 3D Center have stated the GK110 will be around double the size of the GTX 680’s GK104 chip, measuring in at 550 mm² that’s 87% larger than the GK104.
Although there is an 87% rise in size there isn’t an 87% rise in transistors, compute power and CUDA count. There will be between 2000-2500 CUDA cores, 37% more compute power and around 6 billion transistors. The card will probably get a memory upgrade over the GTX 680 and get a 512bit memory interface. Maximum power consumption will be in the 250W-300W ballpark region, substantially higher than the GTX 680. The launch of the GK110 is expected post-August 2012 at the earliest.
