NVIDIA’s New App Causes Game Slowdowns: Here’s How to Fix

The NVIDIA app, which recently replaced GeForce Experience, has gained popularity for its revamped interface and added features. However, reports of significant performance drops in some games have surfaced, with impacts reaching up to 15%. According to Tom’s Hardware, frame rates dropped between 2% and 12% in five tested games, with Black Myth: Wukong experiencing the worst hit—a 15% performance loss on an RTX 4080 Super paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

What’s Causing the Performance Issue?

The slowdown appears to be linked to the app’s in-game filters and photo mode. Even when these features are not actively used, they seem to negatively impact game performance. NVIDIA quickly acknowledged the issue and provided a temporary workaround while they work on a permanent solution.

How to Fix the Issue

NVIDIA’s recommended fix is straightforward: disable in-game filters and photo mode. To apply this workaround:

  • Open the NVIDIA app settings.
  • Navigate to the “Features” section, then to “Overlay.”
  • Disable “In-game filters and photo mode.”
  • Restart the game for the changes to take effect.

Tom’s Hardware tested the solution and confirmed it restores normal performance. This confirms that the filters, even when idle, are the source of the performance drop.
