Obsidian Entertainment, makers of Fallout New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity are making a new RPG game. It will be under Take-Two Interactive’s newPrivate Division, and development will be led by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. The two are long-time collaborators and have been working together since the Interplay days. They then moved on to form Troika games which created the underrated RPG gem Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Although that studio eventually shut down in 2005, Cain moved on to Obsidian Entertainment, and finally working with Boyarsky again starting 2016. Obsidian is keeping details about their next big RPG under wraps for now, but many are understandably excited considering their resume.
As companies become more successful however, the pressures of earning more money becomes harder to resist. Many resort to implementing more online elements. Meanwhile others succumb to implementing micro-transactions and other predatory post-launch monetization schemes. The lure of it is irresistable considering companies can earn up to 4x more than launch sales.
For Obsidian’s part, Cain and Boyarsky wants to make it clear to fans that they have no such plans. No loot crates and no microtransactions. They even put it directly on Twitter promising on camera that there will be no such features on their next project.
That is obviously good news for fans who have faith in Obsidian. Now the question is, what is the next RPG game that they are working on. And why are they being so secretive about it?
