A Closer Look
Solid State Drives come in a variety of sizes so that they can cater for all types of systems. When you first look at an SSD, you will be shown of its notebook size design, perfect for slotting in place to upgrade your notebook or netbook performance. Generally though, most users will be buying an SSD for installing into a desktop machine instead. Unless you have a case that caters for SSDs by having the relevant bracket or mounting bay, you will require some form of bracket to change the form factor of the drive, which is exactly what OCZ give with their OCZ branded installation bay bracket.
The SSD itself is made from a black metal material and features a nice shiny label taking centre stage. The label tells us that its manufactured by OCZ, is part of the Vertex 2 range and that it’s a SATA II based 2.5 Solid State Drive.
The other side of the drive features a silver brushed aluminum material with a sticker informing us of the rated DC voltage, warning information and what size capacity drive you posess. We are looking at the 60GB version today. Just below this is a barcode sticker informing you of the part number and serial number of your particular drive.
As said, this drive uses the SATA II interface, and simply features two connectors; the first being for a SATA data cable whilst the other is for a SATA power connector. One thing i would like to see in the future is the ability for SSDs to be able to use the clip on style SATA cables, though due to SSDs being non-mechanical this isn’t a mass problem as vibration doesn’t effect the cable coming loose.
When installing the drive, you will notice several screw points including the four screw holes on the base of the drive, or by using the four screw holes on the sides; two on either side.
