Official Recall Issued For CableMod 12VHPWR Angled Adapters

It really doesn’t get any better for the 12VHPWR connector does it. Today an official recall for CableMod’s 12VHPWR adapter has been issued in the US due to the risks surrounding the adapter.

CableMod 12VHPWR Recall

CableMod’s 12VHPWR connector has been a known issue for a while with a “revised” adapter being released last year following many reports of issues. Turns out these issues are still happening and as spotted by hothardware.com, a recall notice has been issued for these adapters. A recall notice was seen on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website which states “The adapters’ male connector can become loose, overheat, and melt into the GPU, posing fire and burn hazards.”

The recall includes both the 1.0 and 1.1 revised adapters and CableMod will be offering full refunds for the adapters. The information on the recall is available at CableMod.com and will provide a full refund or $60 store credit.

The CPSC also notes that from 272 reports of adapter failure, this has equated to at least $74,500 in property damage which is quite a sizable amount.

12VHPWR has been a monumental failure for NVIDIA and at this point I’m beyond certain that it isn’t a user error problem as some people still claim. The only positive of this connector is that it makes swapping out GPUs in a test bench a lot easier with just the single cable. We’ll see how things play out with 50 Series.
