It’s always a pleasure when you get to write about something you really love and for me, Studio Ghibli is definitely one of those things. I consider myself somewhat fortunate that I landed onto Ghibli very early on. I watched My Neighbour Totoro for the first time back in 1993 and I have been hooked ever since with a lot of my love for Ghibli being based on their fantastic animation style which surpassed everything else at the time (and arguably since).
When Western Studios such as Disney had transitioned to CGI, Ghibli was still producing painstakingly beautiful hand-drawn animations. They were a literal joy to behold.
Sadly Studio Ghibli these days have semi-shutdown, despite Mayao Miyasaki’s constant declaration that he’s going to make one more film.
If you have ever fancied trying your hand at animation, you are now in luck. OpenToonz, the exact software used by Ghibli to create masterpieces such as Totoro and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, is now available to download and use, for free!
Created by Dwango and including software specifically created by Ghibli and Digital Video, OpenToonz is available to download for free.
This is the exact same software used to create Ghibli films. Such films include Kiki’s Delivery Service, which, incidentally, via a very strange Japanese TV advert, we got to see the cast again all grown up (and apparently hungry for noodles).
The OpenToonz software also includes the Ghibli created addon GTS. This software was created and used specifically by Ghibli to incorporate the scanning of their millions of hand-drawn animation sheets.
You can download the OpenToonz software and GTS addon directly from the website or by clicking the link here.
It’s certainly something to do while we wait for the Ghibli inspired Ni No Kuni 2.
As an absolutely guaranteed fact, I’m going to be trying this tonight. What about you? Are you going to give this a try? Could you be the next Hayao Miyasaki? – Let us know in the comments!
