Opteron Bulldozers released

Although the desktop FX processors may have been delayed Opteron Bulldozer processors are ready and shipping as of this month. Production for the “Interlagos” processors began back in August and now AMD will be shipping its x86 8-16 core Opterons to suppliers for expected arrival in pre-built systems some time next month. AMD will be branding these Opterons under the 6200 series name and will be releasing four models initially:

  • Opteron 6220: 8-core, 3.0GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo, 8MB L2, 8MB L3 cache
  • Opteron 6234: 12-core, 2.4GHz, 2.9GHz Turbo, 12MB L2, 12MB L3 cache
  • Opteron 6272: 16-core, 2.1GHz, 2.6GHz Turbo, 16MB L2, 16MB L3 cache
  • Opteron 6276: 16-core, 2.3GHz, 2.8GHz Turbo, 16MB L2, 16MB L3 cache

AMD is claiming 35% more throughput on the new generation Opteron 12 core over the older model and 50% more throughput on the 16 core versus the old 12 core all within the same power consumption thresholds. The memory controller is also reported to be improved and offer about 35% more productivity. These Opterons are aimed at dual and quad socket servers which offers a massive potential of up to 64 cores of processing power. AMD is desperately hoping these new Opterons can turn their fortunes around in the server market: currently Intel outsell them at a ratio of 19:1.
