Original Modern Warfare 2 Players Being Infected With Self-Spreading Malware

Hacking in old Call of Duty titles is nothing new and fans of the older games are often expecting it when trying to jump into a quick game to relive some old memories. Unfortunately for some users, a new self-spreading malware has been found in online lobbies of the original Modern Warfare 2.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Malware
As reported by TechCrunch, a Steam user named Bee made a comment on the MW2 Steam discussions alerting users of a trojan by the name of Trojan:Win32 Wacatac.B!ml. Supposedly hackers are attacking through lobbies and replacing dsound.dll with the trojan. Further in the thread lp.edoardo, analyzed the malware to find that it was a Worm. Of course, hacking is nothing new in these titles, but malware is definitely a big concern and fortunately, Call of Duty has acknowledged the malware stating in a Tweet/Xeet that they have taken down the multiplayer whilst they investigate an issue.
Considering the love that some of the older Call of Duty titles receive, its no surprise that some people are still playing them despite their shortcomings. According to SteamDB, there are currently 589 people playing the game as of writing which is a good handful of people who could be infected. It’s a shame that some people just don’t want to let others have fun and always strive to ruin things in this way.
Do you still play MW2 or any of the older Call of Duty titles? Let us know in the comments.
