Original Tomb Raider Running at 60FPS With Modern Effects Looks Amazing!

The original Tomb Raider was one seriously impressive game when it launched. Sure, it had some very wobbly polygons, awful pixelation on textures, and a depiction of the female form that appeared to be made out of a collection of traffic cones, but the game was still amazing to play. Now developer realtech VR is working on an unofficial remake of the game, and while it may never officially see the light of day, they’re eager to show it running on PC in a new video.

Using OpenGL 4.5, the game is now using SSAO, bloom post process effects, anti-aliasing, and it’s running at 60fps. Given the original had none of those perks and ran at a locked 30fps, that’s a huge boost in rendering quality. The team is aware that the bloom effects are causing Lara to glow, but they’re planning to fix those.

realtech VR said this is a proof of concept, but they would like to do this project, and Tomb Raider 2, with the hopes of releasing them on Windows 7 and 10.

Will Square Enix give them the green light? We certainly hope so!
