While this might sound a bit unlikely, some NVIDIA partners famous for overclocking graphics cards are considering overclocking tablet. Other people out there have also started the ‘trend’ of overclocking phones, while it is not common, it is happening.
The Tegra 2 can in fact run up to 1.5 GHz with a small voltage adjustment (stock is 1 GHz) but of course this will wear down your battery a little bit quicker. Certainly though, there are people who will appreciate the speed improvements that they will get from this and the principle on Android OS is the same.
Phones like the LG’s Optimus 2X have been overclocked very successfully and it possible that we will start to see ‘factory-overclocked’ tablets being released by NVIDIA’s partners and if the rumours are true maybe even before the Christmas shopping spree.
There is also a lot of advantages to being able to control the Voltage of even a tablet, it would nearly more favourably than overclocking, to underclock or green volt the tablet. This is where you lower the voltage but aim to keep the CPU running at the stock speed and of course stable. Some people will even reduce the clock speeds as this could lead to hugely improved battery life. While it is a laborious task the first few times as it requires a bit of testing, a program or dare I say an app, which has the ability to green volt and overclock the processors when required. Therefore when the tablet is in being used for very basic things you will be improving the battery life but also giving you faster speeds when you load that action packed game.
Of course there are lots of things that can go wrong when overclocking and with the price of tablets as they are, I’m sure not too many consumers will be wanting to risk it, just yet at least.
