Overkill’s Walking Dead Offers Cheap Version To Boost Sales

Overkill’s The Walking Dead Slumping In Sales

Since it’s release at the beginning of November I have commented on more than one occasion that for the hype leading up to the release, since it’s happened, Overkill’s The Walking Dead has gone completely under the radar. Having played it briefly myself, I can attest that while the game has it’s good points, on the whole, it all feels a little underwhelming. It’s a testament to modern gaming in that there’s not enough content and what is there, while good, gets repetitive quickly.

You may disagree, but the sales figures certainly don’t. Sales are, in fact, so poor that a new version has been released for the PC showing a ‘cut-down’ Starter-Edition.

What Is Starter-Edition?

Well, in a nutshell, they’ve found a way to release the game that, by all indications, appears to be exactly the same as the £45 version. It does, however, cost £30 instead. I’m not even being flippant there. Between the current version, of which the £46.49 version is still available, I can’t see what the difference is. I’ve looked hard! The only indication I can find is perhaps the possibility of some free DLC in the future. Maybe some skins.

A Quick Move To Sure Up Bad Sales?

This is clearly a move to try and help promote exceptionally poor sales. I do, however, worry that this could backfire. Had I bought this on launch (at the full price) I’d be rather miffed to find that less than a month later a ‘cut-down’ version for about 40% less than I paid was available. On the other hand though, for around £25, this is now priced to at least tempt to the ‘casual’. Admit it, for this price, if you had £25 burning a hole in your pocket, you’d probably give it a go!

As above, this game isn’t bad. Actually, for £25 it does represent something of good value. It’s just another strange example of games over the last month really suffering in sales.
