Hi-Rez Studios, the privately held game developer that’s responsible for the creation of Global Agenda, Tribes: Ascend and Smite, has recently announced that it is working on a new free-to-play game for the PC and current generation consoles. Dubbed Paladins, the team-based first-person shooter is set in a fantasy world and features deep strategy as well as in-match character progression based on collectible cards.
The game pits teams against one another, and each individual player joins the battle accompanied by a mount, a primary weapon and a set of combat and movement skills. The players have customizable decks of skill cards that can be modified and improved as the game progresses. This means that there are certain choices available in terms of play style, as the player will be able to focus on defensive abilities, utility or pure damage. The COO over at Hi-Rez Studios, Todd Harris, stated the following.
“We’ve managed to keep Paladins under wraps for over a year now, so the dev team is really looking forward to receiving feedback from the hands-on demo at Gamescom. We’ve focused on making something we find fun and competitive, and soon players will help us craft how Paladins grows from here.”
The Paladins senior producer, Mick Larkins, added:
“Paladins has been a passion project of ours from the beginning. We’ve dedicated a separate team from SMITE to work on it, and while we are still early in development, we know we’re crafting something very special. Paladins is extremely quick, with a great deal of depth in how it blends action, tactics, and teamwork, and we’re excited for gamers to start discovering all it has to offer.”
The game is expected to be released in 2016.
