Paramount Movies Going From Cinema to Streaming in 17 Days

I love going to the cinema, but not really for every movie that gets released. Sometimes I’d rather just kick back in my own home and watch it with a few friends. The wait for movies to go from cinema to disc, streaming or cable services can be huge and while efforts have been made to cut this shorter in recent years, it’s always held back by cinemas who want to keep the movie on the big screen for as long as possible, thus maximizing their profits.

Paramount may have the solution. They’ll be pushing some of their smaller movies, the kind that only have 300 national showings, to streaming services within just 17 days of the theatrical release. Cinemas will get a cut of the profits from streaming, helping keep all parties involved happy. It also means that building hype for the big screen becomes a dual marketing move, as people will be able to watch at home while the movie is still being talked about.

Will this move be successful? Who knows, only time will tell, but with AMC and Cineplex, others are likely to follow suit and if it makes money, we’d expect more and more blockbuster movies to be streamed after a shorter time too; it may even help combat illegal downloads from those who simply cannot wait.

The first two movies will be Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, which launch on October 23rd and October 30th respectively.
