Patriot announced the new addition to their lineup of SSDs at CES 2018, but this one isn’t an internal drive. Instead, the new EVLVR is an external and portable SSD with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.

Patriot EVLVR Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD

The EVLVR Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD easily outperforms the speeds of traditional external SSDs. Internally it is using an NVMe drive for the raw performance while the connection is made through a 40Gbps capable interface. The result should be clear by that, an easy three-fold performance increase.

With outstanding speed delivered by the Phison E8 PCIe controller and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, the drive can reach up to 1500MB/s at sequential reads and up to 1000MB/s at sequential writes. On top of being extremely fast, the EVLVR is also power efficient and does not require any external power supply.

Plenty of Capacity on Top of the Speed

The tiny and portable EVLVR drive doesn’t just bring great speeds, it also comes with large capacity options. There will be three version of the drive: A 256GB, a 512GB, and a 1TB capacity. While 1TB is a lot, you can probably fill that in no time with that kind of performance. Never leave a file at home which you might want to take with you.

The Name That’s Hard to Pronounce

The name EVLVR is an abbreviation for “evolver”. A fitting name for a drive utilizing the newest technologies in combination. According to Les Henry, Vice President of Engineering at Patriot, “We are pleased to add the Patriot EVLVR Portable SSD to our SSD line, and our team is especially proud of implementing Thunderbolt 3 which allows Patriot to build high-speed and high-quality portable storage solutions.”

Phison is also happy about the EVLVR and had nothing but good to say. “We are happy to be able to collaborate with Patriot in bringing a high-performance and power efficient external SSD experience to the Thunderbolt 3 eco-system,” said KS Pua, Chairman and CEO of Phison. “We believe the Thunderbolt 3 device market will experience a healthy growth in the coming years.”

Pricing and Availability

The Patriot EVLVR will be available to the public for purchase in March 2017. The MSRP will be set at $199.99, $289.99, and $489.99 for the 256GB, 512GB and 1TB respectively.
