Patriot Viper V770 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

A Closer Look

You’ll find the V770 comes hard-wired with a black and red braided USB cable.

It’s only a single cable on the keyboard end. However, it splits into dual audio jacks and dual USB headers on the end. You just need a single USB, although if you want to use the optional USB and audio pass-through, you can connect the other cables too.

Aluminium

The V770 has a nice weighted feel to it, as well as a rigid and robust chassis thanks to the aluminium construction. The overall fit and finish are fantastic, with nicely finished edges, and a few varying textures and colours are thrown in to keep things looking interesting. Down the left side, you’ll find a light bar, as well as the USB pass-through port.

The keycaps are a very nice, with laser cut lettering to allow RGB lighting to shine through. They’re coated for a nice smooth feel, and their dark black finish contrasts well with the metallic qualities of the keyboard’s chassis.

At its core, it’s like every other keyboard, and everything is where you would expect it to be. There are a few bonus features though, quite a few actually, which are accessed through the Viper Vn shift button.

The full-size number pad is always welcome for work and gaming. The keyboard is relatively wide though, that’s not an issue, more just an observation as the chassis is quite robust on the left and right edges.

Much like the left side, the right also has a pass-through port, this time for audio; it also has another LED light bar.

Taking Control

This is where things get awesome, as there are buttons and dials all over the V770. Up in the top right, you’ll find some lovely two-way toggle rocker switches. These provide multimedia control, and look and feel cool compared to flat buttons. There’s also an infinite scrolling wheel for volume. Furthermore, you can click the wheel for master mute; an LED indicator will let you know if that’s on/off.

There are eight more buttons on the top left, and they’re all ready to deliver funky lighting effects! You can do it all with the software too, but if you prefer something software free and easy to use, the buttons have you covered.

Macro Keys

If lighting isn’t all you need, then the five dedicated macro keys are there for your pleasure too. They’re fully programmable and perfect for gaming, work, or whatever you want really.

Another neat feature is this little pull-out tray at the back.

Phone Holder!

It’s perfectly sized to store your phone in, which is great if you’re streaming your games, running Discord, or anything else.

The base of the keyboard features plenty of thick and strong rubber grips, as well as two kick-stand feet to adjust the angle of the keyboard.

Wrist Rest

Finally, we have the included detachable wrist rest. This is full-width and comes with a grippy soft rubber coating. It looks pretty cool as it is, but it has a few party tricks all of its own.

It magnetically snaps into place on the keyboard, so it’s pretty easy to mount. However, there are some contact pins here too; I wonder what they’re for? You’ll see in a moment!

It looks pretty great once it’s installed, and the keyboard looks fantastic overall. Of course, we still need to see how it performs, so let’s move it over to the gaming area and find out!
