Pricing and Final Thoughts
The newest type of technology always comes at a premium, but it isn’t as bad as one would expect. The 1TB version of Patriot’s Viper VP4100 can be yours for $219.99 and £214.99 at the time of this review. The larger 2TB version will set you back £419.99 and $429.99.
Final Thoughts
Oh, I’ve been waiting for this. For a long time, storage drives have been bottlenecked by the four PCIe 3 lanes. But no more, with the fourth generation of PCIe we can kick the whole thing up another notch. Patriot has created an amazing drive with the Viper VP4100, there can be no doubt about that at all. It takes performance to the next level and easily reaches the 5000MB/s and even goes slightly above it. That’s a serious level of performance that previously only was possible with RAID setups.
All that performance does mean that the SSD controller also needs to perform a whole lot of work. All that work equals heat which could end up bottlenecking a drive. That’s why Patriot thought ahead and added the great looking heatsink onto the Viper VP4100. The drive didn’t break into sweats on any of my tests, even running continuously writes onto the drive for 8+ hours didn’t bother it.
There’s one more thing which I like about the heatsink and that is that it isn’t as high as some other ones I’ve seen in the past. With this lower heatsink, there is less risk of a conflict with add-in cards which are installed in the PCIe slots around your M.2 slots.
Should I Purchase One?
Do you have a CPU and motherboard which supports the new generation of SSDs? Do you have the extra budget to afford the price when compared to a gen.3 drive? Then yes, absolutely. You’ll love it!
Pros
- Great performance
- Good looking and practical with the heatsink
- 5-Year warranty
- Good endurance rating
Cons
- Higher priced than 3rd generation NVMe drives
