PC Game Pass Accounts for Only One-Sixth of Microsoft’s Total Subscribers

PC Game Pass Accounts for Only One-Sixth of Microsoft's Total Subscribers

According to a report by Omdia Games, a market analysis group, subscribers to PC Game Pass currently account for only one-sixth of Microsoft’s total Game Pass users. The study, conducted late last year, considered all tiers of Game Pass, including Core, which is an updated version of the old Live Gold subscription. This tier includes access to multiplayer and a limited catalog of games. Despite the modest numbers on PC, Omdia Games believes this platform has significant potential and represents a major growth opportunity for Xbox. The recent inclusion of high-profile titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is expected to enhance its appeal.

Steam as a Major Barrier to Growth

PC Game Pass

One of the main barriers to the growth of Xbox and Game Pass on PC is competition from Steam, which is widely seen as the primary platform for PC gaming. While publishers like Sega and Square Enix have begun releasing games on Windows Store, many others remain hesitant. As a result, many Xbox console games do not have corresponding PC versions available on the Windows Store. Furthermore, only 7% of Xbox titles supported the Play Anywhere feature in 2024. Play Anywhere allows users to play a game on both Xbox and PC with a single purchase or through Game Pass.

Official data from February 2024 indicates that Game Pass had 34 million total subscribers, including Core users. However, it is believed that the subscriber base has grown since then, driven by the release of major games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently announced that the service set a new subscriber record following the launch of the latest installment in the Call of Duty series.
