If you’ve ever wanted to know what Mario Kart would look like if it were dropped into The Last of Us’s dystopian universe, then Saturday Night Live has the HBO Drama of your dreams… well, sort of. In the latest episode of SNL, a sketch for the fans of the Last of Us and Mario Kart was shown a dark and gritty take on the classic Mushroom Kingdon that has suffered nearly a decade under the rule of Bowzer.
SNL has even bestowed the prestigious role of Mario to Pedro Pascal along with Chloe Fineman as Princess Peach and Kenan Thompson as Marios trigger happy brother Luigi.
Possibly the greatest part of this is the amount of effort and commitment it has taken to make the bit. The effects are rather convincing, for the most part, and the acting is all straight-faced while the whole sketch is full of Mario Kart references such as the shells and banana skins being the standard track dangers or the mushrooms being drugs that make Mario feel big.
This, of course, comes as praise for the HBO show The Last of Us as it continues to gain popularity and in reality, we already have a Mario film on the way from Nintendo that is set to launch sometime this year but now seems kind of boring now that we have seen this gem from SNL.
If would you like to see this show made a reality please tell us in the comments as we would like to know if you like this sketch as much as us.
