The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA for those of you who like catchy acronyms, have written to Giants Software, the developers of upcoming Farming Simulator 17 game. PETA is requesting that they include video footage from an abattoir in the game when it launches in October, to depict what it’s really like to slaughter a pig and show people an honest portrayal of the farming industry.
Of course, this rather graphic addition to the game doesn’t exactly fit the bill, given the game has a light-hearted nature and 3+ age rating. All the people I know that play it are more interested in multiplayer shenanigans in tractors than they are with slaughtering animals.
“to give players an accurate depiction of the industry, the game will need to show that pigs are killed by being hung upside down, stabbed, and dropped into scalding-hot water.” said a press release from PETA.
“Farming Simulator 17 should either show the nightmarish reality endured by pigs at the abattoir or change into Vegan Farming Simulator 17 and let players grow crops – to do anything else would be dishonest”. Not that you have to kill pigs in the game, you can go plant corn if that’s what you want to do.
While they’re at it, the game should come with boots that stink of crap and clothes covered in mud. Going on, perhaps train sim games need insane ticket prices every time you hit the tracks, or racing simulators should come with the added cost of the virtual fuel to match the real world values. My point being, I don’t think Giants Software is going to add this to their game, but with PETA now setting their sights on the gaming industry, this may not be the last we hear from them on similar matters. I’m not saying they’re doing wrong to help improve conditions for animals, but this one is a bit of a long shot.
