PETA Asks that Warhammer Characters Stop Wearing Fur

The group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are known for many of their antics and often times their crusade goes beyond the pursuit of protection of animals in the real world and into the virtual one. They have campaigned against Giants Software’s Farming Simulator and have criticized Pokemon for pitting made-up virtual animals against each other, but their latest crosshairs are aimed straight to Games Workshop and their Warhammer series. In a written statement sent to Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree, PETA has asked that all fur garments be banned from all Warhammer character depictions. This includes even the bad guys such as Orks and Chaos marines, since as PETA puts it “nothing on the bloody battlefields of Warhammer’s conflict-ravaged universe could match the terrible reality that foxes, minks, rabbits, and other living beings experience at the hands of the fur trade”. The group also adds that  while they “appreciate that they are fictional, draping them in what looks like a replica of a dead animal sends the message that wearing fur is acceptable – when, in fact, it has no more place in 2017 than it would in the year 40,000.”

Aside from providing table top games, Games Workshop also has many Warhammer and Warhammer 40K video game titles including three coming out in 2017 for the PC: Warhammer 40K: Inquisitor-Martyr, an action RPG by Neocore Games, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War III, a real-time based strategy game by Relic Enterainment and Warhammer 40: Sanctus Reach, a turn-based strategy game by Straylight Entertainment.
