How Much Does it Cost?
The Philips 279M1RV 4K HDR 144Hz IPS Gaming Monitor is likely a little overkill for most people’s needs and their budgets too. That being said, if you’re wanting the best gaming experience from your new console or a high-end gaming PC, it’s certainly going to get the job done. Prices start at around £760 for the 27″ model and move up to around £870 for the 32″ model. You can check for up-to-date prices and stock on Amazon here, but for some reason, their 27″ model is overpriced at the time of writing, so be sure to check around for details at your favourite retailers, such as this deal here.
Overview
While you may baulk at the price of the Philips 279M1RV 4K HDR 144Hz IPS Gaming Monitor its performance and feature set are undeniable appealing. For PC gaming, it’s going to help you get the best out of graphics cards such as the RTX 3080 and above, or their AMD equivalent, albeit you’ll need a PC that’s potent all around to max out games at both 4K resolutions and 144Hz refresh rates. However, when you do have that hardware, throwing the image on a display of this calibre is something to behold.
Panel Performance
Excellent pixel density on both the 27″ and 32″ models means a superbly crisp image at all times. Details are shart and everything from the small text in emails to distant enemies in your favourite games are easy to spot. At a 144Hz refresh rate and with FreeSync/G-Sync included to smooth out any screen tearing, fast-paced action is not only silky smooth but exceptionally clear too. Making fast turns in Apex and being able to clearly see your enemies racing around is a true advantage that cannot be understated. There’s a reason the pros don’t use 60Hz monitors anymore.
Colours
The colour reproduction is just awesome right out of the box. There’s a report included in the box with the monitor showing its factory analysis and calibration that’s done on every single panel. They promise an average Delta-E of less than 2, and this monitor is closer to 0.5 on sRGB which is excellent. This monitor’s capabilities go far beyond that though, offering 98% of the DCI-P3 colour scale, meaning vastly superior and richer colours overall. Movies, games, and images look absolutely stunning.
Speakers
One surprising addition to this monitor is the speakers. They’re properly punchy with some decent bass. They automatically kicked in when I connected the Xbox and they’re pretty rocking. I could happily use them day to day for some work and gaming stuff. They even sounded decent for music. While dedicated speakers are still better, they’re a welcome addition.
Ergonomics
The ergonomics are very good, and while the monitor lacks a portrait mode, the durable and heavy stand and a good range of rotation and angle adjustment make it easy to find a perfect viewing angle. The screen can get a little shiny in brighter rooms though, but overall, the picture still really pops thanks to its excellent peak brightness and rich colours.
Should I Buy One?
If you’re looking for a monitor that will blow you away while working, consuming media and gaming, especially gaming, then this is it. I’d be eager to get my hands on the 32″ model personally, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t one of the finest all-around monitors on the market right now! Expensive, but a solid investment and an absolute powerhouse of premium features. Philips really are top of their game right now, highly recommended.
