How Much Does it Cost?

The Philips 27E1N1300AE 27 Inch FHD Monitor is available from Amazon for a very reasonable £159.99, which I think is a perfectly reasonable price for a monitor with a 100Hz IPS 27″ panel from a well respected and trusted brand name. Sure, you can get slightly cheaper panels from no-name import brands, but well, you get what you pay for with those.

Overview

Philips is a well-known brand name, so it’s no surprise that this budget monitor is still a quality product. It’s designed to be more affordable, so there are some trimmed features to keep the price down, but again, the price reflects these so I see no issue here. For example, there’s height adjustment, but you can’t pivot the panel left-to-right and must turn the stand to do so. There’s no portrait mode on the stand either. However, since the stand is VESA, you could use your own monitor arm or wall mount to provide you with the ergonomic features you require.

The backlight is edge-lit, and there’s no HDR, not that HDR on cheaper monitors is anything usable anyway, and while this also means this panel is limited to around 250 nits, which is common in this price range, if you want an eye-melting level of brightness or HDR, you may want to look a little higher up the product range.

The colour reproduction is good, with some inaccuracy in the blues, but nothing your typical user would ever really notice in day-to-day work tasks and gaming. The reasonable brightness, 1300:1 contrast ratio and the IPS panel combined actually result in pleasing image quality, and this can be improved by setting the colour temperature to “Warm” in the OSD.

There is no DisplayPort connector, at least, not the big one. However, there is an HDMI input and a Type-C input that allows for DisplayPort and Power Delivery making it super easy to hook up your laptop and charge it from a single cable, making it a good monitor for offices with a hot desking or for those who work from home.

Should I Buy One?

At this price range, the Philips 27E1N1300AE is one of the best in its class, with a good quality panel that delivers a clear image, 100Hz refresh rate, and good response times that make it very comfortable to use for daily work, and it still holds up well enough to enjoy your favourite games on an evening too. However, features like USB Type-C DisplayPort and Power Delivery, also make it extremely versatile for those wanting to use their PC over HDMI and hook up their notebook with a single cable.
