Philips is preparing a new monitor with an ultra massively wide 49-inch diagonal display. This is a curved VA panel with a 3840×1080 resolution, up to 600 nits brightness and up to 5000:1 contrast ratio. The 1800R curvature has 178º/178º vertical/horizontal viewing angles and understandably takes up considerable space on top of the desk.
The 3840 x 1080 resolution is far from typical. The resulting aspect ratio is actuall 32:9 (3.56:1) and is much wider than what most are familiar with. Philips did not finalize other details such as refresh rate and response times yet, although the screen itself has a 0.312 mm² pixel pitch with 81.41 PPI.
In terms of connectivity, it comes with a single DP, a pair of HDMI ports and one d-Sub port. The d-Sub port maxes out at 1,920 x 1,200 so using that cable is not going to be able to take full advantage of the monitor’s resolution. However, it can be useful for a picture-in-picture setup.
The 492P8 also has two USB 3.0 Type-A connectors, a Gigabit ethernet port and two 3.5mm audio ports for input and output.
According to Anandtech who saw the display in person at IFA 2017, the massive display will not be available until Q2 1018. The preliminary price puts it at €899 or $1077. Since the launch date is so far away, that price might change further depending on how the display landscape looks.
