Phison @ Computex 2024

Computex 2024:

Phison is one of the biggest names in the world for storage, and that’s hardly surprising given that nearly all of the best drives in the world utilise a Phison controller. However, did you know that Phison also make their own drives? Of course, this gives them a bit of an in-house advantage, as they know more about the controller than any other brand, and this often means their drives performance is a little bit above that of the competition.

First up, they’ve got the Next-Gen USB Phison PS2251-21, an U21 portable MagSafe device, available in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities and yet still retains a surprisingly compact form factor too.

These drives use the worlds first native USB4 controller units, with a staggering 40GB/s bandwidth, and using the 1st direct USB-to-NAND solution with USB4 Gen3x2. They use a DRAM-less design, and feature 4-channels with 16 CEs and can handle up to 16GB capacities.

As you can see in the benchmarks, the speeds are absolutely incredible for external USB storage.

And since they’re MagSafe, they simply snap on to compatible devices, making them extremely portable and versatile.

Next up, is the PS5031-E31T, which they say is the world’s first 10GB/s Mainstream SSD. It uses the PCIe Gen5x4 interface, and the latest TSMC 7nm process, a DRAM-less design, and supports capacities of up to 8TB using 3D TLC or QLC memory. With an ARM Cortex R5 CPU, and Phison 7th Gen LDPC + RAID EEC, they can deliver read and write performance that easily exceeds 10 GB/s.

To demonstrate their performance possibilities, Phison used the Apex Storage X16 Gen5 RAID card with the Phison E26 controllers and SSDs. This resulted in truly breath-taking performance, hitting a staggering 56 GB/s read and 54 GB/s write.

Using this card they’re also to reach a staggering 20M IOPS for Random Read and 19M IOPS for Random Write.

But when you see 16 flagship M.2 SSDs installed like this, it’s not hard to see why the speeds are so incredible, and while your typical gamer doesn’t need this, for workstation and AI workloads, it’s obviously going to prove very popular.
