A Closer Look
What’s exceptional about this SSD is that it’s, well, just an SSD to most eyes. It is not actually that much different than the current crop of incredible Gen5 drives which top out at around 12GB/s and some can even push to around 13GB/s, but as they said above, everything is fine-tuned for extreme performance, allowing it to hit a class-leading 14GB/s. To put that sort of speed into perspective, mechanical hard drives top out at around 120MB/s, and 2.5″ SATA SSDs at around 550MBs, making this SSD around 120 times faster than mechanical hard drives and more than 25x that of a more traditional SSD. Even compared to the current flagship drives, it’s still around 10% faster, which is pretty incredible given they’re hardly slow to begin with.
Again, this isn’t a drive that will be for sale as it is, but the PS5026-E26 controller it uses will support both 3D TLC and QLC NAND Flash memory.
It features a dual CPU Arm Cortex R5 architecture which uses a TSMC 12nm process.
It supports the latest DRAM controllers, with up to LPDDR4 and DDR4 of up to 3200MB/s.
It also comes with plenty of technology to ensure reliability, such as the Phison 5th Gen LDPC ECC and RAID ECC, Smart ECC, and end-to-end data path protection. While security features cover AES 256, SHA 512, RSA 4096 and TCG Opal.
