Early access games can occasionally have problems. As long as the development is moving in the right direction, these are usually forgiveable. Occasionally, however, they are also hilarious as was found on a recent encounter with popular early access title PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
For those of you unfamiliar with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the game is a war based FPS. A similar styled mechanic to H1Z1, the game revolves around 100 initial players parachuting (at their own discretion) onto the map. These players must then kill each other on an ever reducing map until 1 person remains. This is known as the ‘last man standing’ style of gaming.
Well, unfortunately, there was a slight issue with the parachute jump. Put simply no one could voluntarily jump from the plane. This caused all 100 players to be effectively trapped. If this wasn’t bad enough, when the default timer expired, the game decided to launch all 100 players out at the same time. The sky was somewhat crouded.
Generally not. On the whole PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds does of course have it’s problems, but compared to most early access games it’s actually remarkably solid. Projects such as Dayz (which after a ridiculous amount of time is still in early access and an abysmal mess) don’t help build confidence, but I can at least say, on the whole, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds works and is actually a decent bit of fun.
The issue itself was due to a rather horrific server lag, not an unheard of issue, however the results are rarely this hilarious.
A link to the steam store page can be found here. The video of the incident is also below. Watching it might put you off, and to be honest, I think at present the £26.99 pricetag is a little pricey for early access. If you do want something that’s a little bit different though, this could represent some fun for your weekend. Since the games release 3 months ago, it has seen some good consistent improvements. Now, excuse me while I kiss the sky!
