PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG is breaking records left and right. It has cemented its legacy recently when it actually surpassed DOTA2 in concurrent online player count. Valve’s DOTA2 is a free-to-play game that has dominated the charts ever since it launched. Now, PUBG boasts a whopping 15 million+ plus users in total. In fact, by the time this is published, it will be 16 million. On top of that, the highest concurrent peak is at 2,041,534, with an average of 1.5M+. The stats come directly from SteamSpy who has been keeping track of the game’s statistics since launch.
Comparisons with Fortnite Battle Royale is inevitable. Even though PUBG is a paid Steam Early Access game, while Fortnite Battle Royale is free. Both have similar gamplay and “battle royale” style deathmatch mechanics. Fortnite now has over 10 million players after just two weeks of launch, but PUBG is still holding strong. Coupled with EPIC games very aggressive roll-out and strategy, upgrading servers and kicking out cheaters, Fortnite Battle Royale is likely to overtake PUBG soon. Only time will tell.
Either way, this kind of competition has one clear winner so far, and that is the gamers.
