PlayStation 4 Slim Purportedly Uses 2.5-Inch Hard Drives

Storage technology has advanced at a blistering pace and it’s now possible to obtain affordable SATA devices at a reasonable price point. Not only that, the advent of incredibly fast NVMe drives in a small form factor provides astonishing read/write speeds which make traditional drives seem rather outdated. Saying that, NVMe storage has a hefty price premium so it’s still recommended for most users to purchase an SATA product to enjoy larger capacities. While storage speeds and capacities have increased, it’s not really been integrated into the current crop of consoles. Granted, the new Xbox Elite features an SSHD drive, but the PlayStation 4’s basic model revolves around a 2.5-inch 500GB device. According to the Twitter user, shortman82, Sony hasn’t altered the storage configuration for the upcoming slim model:

This is a little disappointing as it would have been a great upgrade to have some sort of SSD or 3.5-inch SATA drive with faster speeds. It looks like the new slim model is designed to be relatively cheap and expand Sony’s user-base while the PlayStation Neo could easily retail for a premium price given the enhanced specification.

Are you looking forward to the PlayStation 4 slim?
