Sony‘s PlayStation 4 console is still doing well despite its age. In fact, they it has sold more than 70 million units since its 2013 launch up until early December 2017. According to analyst Lewis Ward of IDC, he believes it is can actually hit the 100 million milestone by 2019. That means he believes that within the next 12 months or so, the console will sell 30 million more additional units. The sales figures for the holiday season is not available yet.
According to PlayStation chief Eric Lempel, 2017 is a very strong year for the them. Sony actually sold more consoles during the most recent Black Friday than in their 22-year history. So this trend most likely followed through until December. Profits are also up 346%, which includes all PlayStation related products. Discounted PSVR bundles and PS4 Slim 1TB consoles are some of the most popular this year.
“Going into this generation, a lot of people were counting out the console business and saying it wasn’t going to work out,” Lempel said. “But as you can see, the PlayStation 4 business is thriving.”
During its lifespan, the previous generation PS3 managed to move over 80 million units. The PS4 is on track to beat that number and more before the next-gen arrives. According to analysts, the PlayStation 5 is not likely to come out until 2021.
