PlayStation Users Will Lose Access To Purchased TV Shows From Discovery TV

I imagine most of us are fully aware of the volatile nature of digital media, you don’t really own it and at any point it could be taken away entirely. It’s quite a mess and does make you mourn the almost death of physical media especially with consoles such as the PS5 which features an optional disk drive. On the topic of the PS5, Sony has recently sent out a message stating that PlayStation users will soon be losing access to TV shows made by discovery.
PlayStation Users Losing Purchased TV Shows
As reported by Kotaku, The reality TV network Discovery will no longer feature content on the PlayStation. The message shared with users stated “Due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library,”
All the shows affected by this were listed on the PlayStation Website and it is a really long list. This is incredibly sad for those who have purchased this as they have effectively lost their money, buying digital media is effectively just renting at this point with a surprise return date.
This isn’t the first time this has happened and not the first time for Sony either as back in 2022, StudioCanal films and TV were removed in Germany and Austria affecting 314 titles in Germany and 137 in Austria. (Via The Verge)
Physical Media needs to remain relevant if we want to actually own products, maybe 5.25″ bays need to make a comeback in PC cases but then again, external disk readers are perfectly fine for the job.
