Plextor M8V Value-Series SSD Launched

Plextor M8V: Budget-Oriented SSDs

Plextor first unveiled their new M8V value-oriented solid-state drive line at CES 2018. It succeeds the M7V line and utilizes Silicon Motion’s SM2258 controller with Toshiba 3D TLC 64-layer NAND. It is capable of up to 560MB/s during sequential reads and up to 520MB/s during writes. The random performance goes up to 82K IOPS when reading and 81K when writing.

Just like the M7V, this drive comes as both a 2.5-inch SATA and an M.2 2280 SATA form factor. There are still plenty of SATA users around and every single new motherboard supports M.2 drives so this upgrade is open to almost everyone. The naming scheme uses ‘M8VC’ for the 2.5-inch model, while the M.2 drive goes by ‘M8VG’.

What Capacity Options are Available for the M8V?

In terms of of capacity, Plextor provides 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options. Each with 70 TBW, 140 TBW and 280 TBW endurance rating respectively. Unfortunately, there is no 1TB option so users who are looking for a large storage upgrade would have to look elsewhere. Either that, or purchase two 512GB drives.

The 128GB capacity is simply too low for modern gaming builds. However, those who are building multiple office PCs for business would probably opt for one since that is all that is necessary.

How Much Does the M8V SSD Cost?

Plextor did not provide any pricing information available yet. However, expect it to be similar to the M7V pricing relative to other drives. Each drive comes with a 3-year warranty.
