Final Thoughts

Pricing

At the time of writing, the S2 series is still relatively new and as such not available so widely yet in all capacity options. While Amazon does stock the 2.5-inch version in 512GB size for $154.99, the M.2 version is currently only listed as the 256GB for $84.99. However, we can assume that the M.2 price will be about the same. That’s only $0.3 per GB capacity.

Overview

It can be a tough choice to pick the SSD drive that you want, especially when it’s your first one and you’re just now taking the plunge into this market of fast storage drives. The Plextor S2 series and the S2G M.2 drive that I’ve tested today would be a great choice if you are in this situation. It is built with quality components, it has been heavily tested with a zero-fail tolerance, and it comes with added software bonus.

On its own, the S2G performs great with speeds up to 560MB/s when reading and 530MB/s while writing which can be increased up to 12 times with the use of PlexTurbo caching. The added bonus of PlexVault for secure file keeping and PlexCompressor for extra storage capacity further add to the value of the drive and its available usage. The performance also stays above the 200MB/s during long sequential write operations which often is a problem for TLC drives. But not so for the Plextor S2G.

The drive comes with all the basic features, but also more advanced ones such as the LDPC error correction technology and PlexNitro which gives you the full drive capacity without the need for over-provisioning. Overall, a complete solution that will be a great drive as your first SSD, but it isn’t limited to those. It performs great and will fit most modern systems from ultrabooks to desktop systems.

Last but not least, it comes with a great endurance testing, full availability of the capacity, and it is backed by a 3-year warranty.

Pros

  • Good performance
  • Fair pricing
  • PlexTurbo caching technology
  • PlexCompression and PlexVault

Cons

  • None

“The Plextor S2 series would be a great drive for anyone that wants a lot of performance and capacity without paying a lot – and it isn’t just for first-time SSD owners despite them being the target area.”

Bang-For-Buck
