Pokemon

Pokemon is one of Nintendo’s most successful series and continues to attract a passionate following. Any physical items sporting the Pokemon name tend to be in great demand and hold their value exceedingly well. For example, some of the original Gameboy titles fetch a decent amount of money on eBay and rise in value at a brisk pace. Not only that, Pokemon trading cards became really popular and a common past time for children during their lunch breaks. As you might expect, some of the rarest Pokemon cards are collectable and certain people are prepared to pay huge sums to get their hands on them.

Recently, a mint condition “Pikachu Illustrator” trading card sold for a world record fee of $54,970 during a public auction of comics and comic art at Heritage Auctions. Here we can see an example of the card in question:

According to Heritage auctions:

“The Pikachu Illustrator first sold in the early 2000s for around $23,000. The Pikachu Illustrator Card is considered the most valuable and iconic Pokémon Card among collectors.”

“These particular cards were “designed by Atsuko Nishida, one of the chief Pokémon graphic illustrators. The card depicts the fan-favorite Pikachu, holding what seems to be drawing utensils.”

Rather impressive, the Pikachu Illustrator trading card was sold in very limited numbers and it’s estimated around 20-39 copies were released. Also, it’s predicted that only 10 are graded in top condition which makes this recent sale a very rare occurrence. Perhaps, the buyer thought the card would only increase in value and perceived it as a solid investment. Whatever the case, it’s a massive amount of money which almost defies belief. As time goes on, I can only see gaming collectables becoming more valuable and selling for amounts which can only be described as eye-watering.

How much would you pay for a rare Pokemon card?
