Poor Design Choices Plaguing LG UltraFine 5K Monitors

LG are quite proud of their UltraFine 5K Monitor, and they’ve (almost) every right to be, it’s a fantastic looking display and it has a jaw-dropping 5K resolution panel on it that’s a sight to behold, at least when it’s not flickering or blinking off completely!

It seems that while they were designing the monitor, they may have been in a bit of a rush, as the team at LG forgot to equip the display with proper EM interference shielding. When the monitor comes within two meters of a WiFi router, the screen flickers. If that’s not bad enough, if the router gets closer, the display can go completely blank, rendering it useless.

Of course, the simple fix is to move your wireless hardware at least 2 meters away from the display, although I can imagine that may not be possible for all users, and that some scenarios that 2-meter range may be much worse if using high-powered WiFi hardware.

If you’re stuck with this problem, the best thing to do is get in touch with LG and tell them they’ve screwed up, with any luck they’ll RMA the hardware for an improved model in the near future.
