PowerColor Red Devil RX 7900XTX Found To Have Poor Thermal Paste Applications

It has been discovered that Some of PowerColor’s Red Devil 7900XTX have been shipped with a factory defect involving the thermal paste application on the cards leading to high hot spot temperatures.

PowerColor Red Devil 7900XTX Thermal Paste Issues

This issue has been highlighted and shared by the team at Igorslab who after seeing various complaints about the card’s temperature, managed to test the card with an 80°C GPU and 110°C at the hotspot which is far from desired. After doing initial testing the card was taken apart to inspect the thermal paste where it was found to have several spots without contact as well as an uneven distribution which they highlighted in yellow.

Repasting And PowerColor’s Response

Following this discovery, the obvious next step is to repaste the card correctly which solved the issue and dropped the temperatures back down to comfortable levels of around 70-75°C GPU and 90-95°C on the hotspot. This issue is fairly serious and the cards should’ve never left the factory with such a poor thermal paste application and following igorslab’s investigation, PowerColor reached out to release a statement.

We have identified an issue on our production line where some of the cards are experiencing higher hot spot temperatures than usual. We verified that this happens to a small percentage of the total output and we are already in the process of replacing the thermal grease. With the new input from IgorLabs we are also verifying if changing the way we mount the cooler onto the card adds to improved thermal performance . We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible to ensure that our customers receive only the highest quality products. If anyone is experiencing this issue, please reach out to  info@powercolor.com.

If you’ve got a Red Devil 7900 XTX and experiencing these issues and you are comfortable enough with repasting, then you can follow the tutorial Igorslab has created for the process, otherwise contact PowerColor.
