The PowerColor Red Devil RX590 is available now for just £224.99. That’s the same price as most RX590 cards, such as the Sapphire Nitro+, XFX Fatboy, and many others. It’s also about the same price as the current crop of GTX 16xx cards from Nvidia, which is a bit of a thorn in AMD’s side. Readers in the US can also find this card for $259.99, but on sale for $229.99 at the time of writing.
At the same price, it’s a tough performance draw between both the AMD RX590 chipset and the newer GTX 1660 series from Nvidia. They both offer competitive 1080p and 1440p performance even in the latest games. However, it’s more complicated than that. The Nvidia cards are a lot more efficient compared to the AMD cards. However, with AMD you get FreeSync support and most monitors have FreeSync now without the price premium of G-Sync. Which of those is most important to you is basically what will tip the scales in favour of either for you. For me, I’d buy the FreeSync ready AMD card as I’d get more value as a gamer in this price range.
It’s a great card, no doubt about that. It’s a modest step up from the RX580 performance and while not the fastest thing we’ve tested, it’s still got the guts to blast through modern games at high settings. At 1080p, most games will play at ultra easily enough too. I’m sure there are people screaming “OMG BUT THOSE 4K RESULTS” but honestly, look at the Steam Survey and tell me how many people actually have 4K monitors… It’s not a lot.
For a little over £200/$200, it’s obviously got a lot of mass appeal. For the AMD loyalists, it’s a great choice. However, with Nvidia also competing for this price bracket, I think the FreeSync option helps AMD out a lot here. It’s a great looking and performing card though, and the best AMD has to offer from this series, as the Vega 56 is a little over £300.
