Powercolor Releases DEVIL BOX GPU Enclosure

With the introduction of Thunderbolt, one of the first uses that many thought of was attaching an external GPU over the PCIe connection. This would allow even wimpy laptops and desktops to play the most demanding of games while retaining mobility. 2 iterations later and with much better standardization, we finally have Powercolor’s DEVIL BOX, an external GPU enclosure for the masses.

Based on the AMD XConnect technology, the DEVIL BOX will allow an eGPU to function as part of a system. This comes courtesy of the Thunderbolt 3 connection that provides 40Gbps of bandwidth, more than PCIe 3.0 x4 or PCIe 2.0 x8 provide. The enclosure also provides 4x USB 3.0,  1x USB 3.1 Type C, Gigabit Ethernet and a SATA III port.

The entire enclosure is powered by a 500W PSU, with 375W dedicated to the GPU. This should allow a very potent graphics solution. Once you consider the power savings of Pascal and Polaris, there may be no single GPU card this baby can’t power going forward. Unfortunately, only current gen cards are supported but I expect that’s because Powercolor hasn’t had a chance to test the newer Nvidia cards out yet.

PowerColor did not reveal when the Devil Box would be available, nor the pricing details.
