Microsoft Xbox Project Scorpio Price Tag Revealed at $499

Microsoft’s Project Scorpio pricinghas now been revealed, hours ahead of the press conference event. The confirmation comes from Game Awards host Geoff Knightley’s Twitter account, stating a $499 USD price tag. This price puts it at $100 USD more than Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro released last year. The extra cost seems natural considering the new Xbox is hailed as a “true” 4K gaming console. The PlayStation 4 Pro in comparison, is unable to output true 4K in some titles and are merely upscaled.

Can Project Scorpio Live Up to the Hype?

Aside from the rumours and leaks leading up to the event, many fans are concerned whether the new Xbox can live up to the hype. Microsoft has been touting it as “the most powerful games console ever” in promotional ads after all. Developers seem to think so, with notable names including as Cliff Bleszinski praising Microsoft for their efforts.

The final specification for the games console has Project Scorpio rocking a custom 8-core x86 CPU at 2.3GHz. The GPU inside has 40 compute units running at 1172MHz and it has 12GB of GDDR5 memory. A 1TB 2.5″ hard drive is used for internal storage.  All in all, the total compute power supposedly clocks in at 6 teraflops, compared to PlayStation 4 Pro’s 4.2. Considering that performance gap, the $100 extra in price sounds more than fair.
