Prototype Rayman SNES Game Released Online

Rayman Prototype!

I’m a big fan of the first Rayman game, or at least the one I thought was the first. Rayman on the PlayStation 1 was and still is a truly fantastic platform game. However, once the game went 3D, it lost pretty much every bit of charm it had, at least in my opinion. Now we have the awesome news that there was once going to be a Rayman game for the SNES. To make things even better, the game designer and archivist Omar Cornut has found a copy of the prototype! Apparently, the game was discovered last fall, however, a dump of the ROM has now been made available to download and play!

Where did it come from?

When speaking with Kotaku, Omar discussed how he came to get hold of the game:

“There’s not a lot to it really, I borrowed the cartridge from Michel Ancel [the games creator] who kindly let me look at it and dump it.”

“I’ve been gathering odd games and prototypes for a long time through my website, so when I saw his friend found that cartridge I immediately suggested dumping it,” Cornut said.

It is awesome of both of them to ensure this game gets preserved. However, it does make you wonder how many projects like this have been lost to the sands of time!

Download and Play

The prototype is just that, there’s not a huge amount to do, but it could be a fun ROM for those who want to hack the code, and see if it’s hiding any other secrets. You can download it here. Remember you’ll need a bit of software like ZSNES to run the ROM!
