PS4 Pro Boost Mode Improves Framerates by up to 38 Percent

Not too long ago, we told you that the PlayStation 4’s new software update would be able to deliver improved performance in certain games that haven’t received their own updates in order to support the console’s new hardware. We’re talking about Version 4.5’s Boost Mode, which was recently tested by Digital Foundry in its beta form. The results of these tests were interesting, to say the least, as some games reported a performance increase of up to 38 percent. It’s worth pointing out that not all games will benefit from this new feature, as some of them are simply capped at 30 FPS, such as Destiny.

Actually, most games only saw a performance increase of about 14 percent, which makes sense since the PS4 Pro has a GPU clock speed of  911 MHz when compared to the 800 MHz offered by the standard model. Therefore, GPU-bound titles only received a 14 percent boost in performance, but games that rely on memory bandwidth and CPU benefited greatly from Boost Mode, including Assassin’s Creed Unity, which managed to hold a steady 30 FPS. As for titles that are capped at 60 FPS, Boost Mode allows them to reach the cap easier and more consistently. Best examples include the 64-player multiplayer mode in Battlefield 4, BioShock Infinite, and Tomb Raider Definitive Edition.

If you own a PlayStation 4 Pro console, you should expect to receive the new software update in the following weeks.
