PS5 Prices Set to Rise in Japan in September 2024

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced another price increase for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in Japan, effective from September 2, 2024. The standard PS5 model will see its price jump to ¥79,980 ($550), which is a significant increase from its current price of ¥66,980 ($460). The Digital Edition will also go up by ¥13,000, rising from ¥59,980 ($415) to ¥72,980 ($505).
Accessories and Further Increases
In addition to the console itself, other PS5 accessories will also see price hikes. The DualSense controller, for example, will now cost between ¥11,480 and ¥11,980 ($80–$83), compared to its current price range of ¥9,480 to ¥9,980 ($65–$68). Similarly, the PlayStation Portal will increase to ¥34,980 ($240), up from its launch price of ¥29,980 ($205).
Sony attributes these increases to “recent challenging external environment, including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation, and the impact it will have on our business,” as explained on the PlayStation Blog.
There are concerns among players in the West that these price hikes might extend beyond Japan. While the U.S. has largely avoided price increases so far, Europe has already seen adjustments. The question now is whether other regions will soon face similar changes. For now, Sony has not announced any additional price hikes outside of Japan.
