As the second quarter of the fiscal year comes to a close, Sony has revealed the PlayStation 5’s total sales. While the number is positive, it’s still behind what the PS4 had achieved during the same time period. Fortunately, software sales and PS Plus subscriptions are on the rise.
PS5 Sales and Performance Compared to PS4
According to Sony, 3.8 million PS5s were sold worldwide between July and September 2024, bringing the total to 65.5 million units since its launch in 2020. The quarterly figure represents a 29% decrease compared to the same period last year. The PS4, meanwhile, had sold 67.5 million units during the same time period. However, the Japanese company hopes to increase its numbers in the future, thanks in part to the PS5 Pro.
At the same time, Sony reported that sales of its games and network services division increased by 12% year-over-year, generating approximately $7 billion. This was mainly due to an increase in sales of third-party titles. Here, EA Sports FC 25 was specifically mentioned, along with Black Myth: Wukong.
Sony’s network services revenue, which includes PS Plus and advertising revenue, meanwhile, rose 18% compared to last year. Monthly active users across all platforms rose 8% in September compared to the same month in 2023, marking its eighth consecutive quarter of growth.
Finally, Sony noted that the future of PlayStation will be marked by single-player experiences and games as a service. They also mentioned that they will learn from all the positive things they saw with Helldivers II, and all the negative things that Concord generated.
